SD COMPREHENSIVE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING PROGRAM

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE

A. UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPTING SELF
   
Understanding feelings, the physical and emotional changes of adolescence, stress, depression and assume the responsibility for their own behavior.

B. GETTING ALONG WITH OTHERS
   
Making and keeping friends, understanding and respect cultural differences, resolving conflicts, and know how to participate in groups.

C. KNOWING THE AFFECTS OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL
   
Knowing the legal implications of drug use, the physical effects of drug and alcohol, handling peer pressure.

D. LEARNING ABOUT FAMILY, SCHOOL & COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITIES
   
Getting along with parents and siblings, understand their responsibilities within their family, sources of family stress, recognize the value of contributing to their family and community, and
    know how to adapt to family changes.

E. KNOWING ABOUT PERSONAL SAFETY
   
Knowing safety rules, be able to identify abusive behavior, demonstrate the ability to stand up for personal rights, know where and how to get help.

F. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND GOOD WORK HABITS
   
Understand the consequences of negative attitudes toward school and work, demonstrate positive work attitudes and behaviors, understand the importance of cooperation.

G. IMPROVE STUDY AND LEARNING SKILLS
   
Know how to manage time and organize classroom and homework materials, understand the importance of motivation to school success, effective techniques for studying and taking notes  
    and appropriate classroom and school behavior.

H. LEARNING AND USING EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS
   
Knowing how to listen and follow directions, understand the importance of non-verbal communication, develop interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member, and how to overcome
    communication roadblocks.

I. UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEARNING AND WORK
   
Understand the importance of practice and effort to educational achievement, how skills developed in school relate to work and career goals, and the importance of preparing for occupations.

J. PLANNING FOR SCHOOL AND BEYOND
   
Knowing what is expected in this school and next year.

K. MAKING DECISIONS AND SETTING GOALS
   
Knowing what is important, how choices are made, how to come up with many possible solutions to problems, how to set realistic goals, accept responsibility for decisions and actions, make
    effective use of time, effort and resources in making decisions.

L. SKILLS TO UNDERSTAND AND USE CAREER INFORMATION
   
Demonstrate knowledge of the world of work and career clusters, identify personal interests, abilities and skills and understand the relationship of interests and abilities to occupations.

M. SKILLS TO FIND, MAINTAIN AND CHANGE JOBS
   
(This goal is not introduced until middle school)

N. LEARNING ABOUT LEISURE TIME
   
Identify personal leisure interests, identify home, school and community leisure activities, and demonstrate responsible behaviors in all leisure activities.

O. UNDERSTAND THAT BEING MALE OR FEMALE DOESN'T LIMIT WORK OPPORTUNITIES
   
Be able to identify factors that influence changing career patterns of women and men, know how to handle disapproval of interest in non-traditional occupations and that it is okay to take
    courses or make career plans for non- traditional occupations.
